MNP stands for Mobile Number Portability.
Using MNP service a customer of a particular telecom service provider could retain his/her old number and port out to another operator very easily. Until now this facility was available only for for home circles i.e. a customer belonging to West Bengal telecom circle could only change his/her operator in the same circle.
National MNP is active from today onwards. Form now on, if a customer of a particular telecom circle can change his/her operator in any 22 telecom circles of India without having to change his/her mobile no.
Mobile phone users can now retain their old numbers even if they change states or circles.
Earlier the deadline to roll out national MNP was May 2. This was extended after COAI requested for an extension from Department of Telecom.
According to TRAI data, till April 2015, more than 157 million customers have used MNP facility and ported to other operators.
